About Us

Who We Are

Community Innovation News is an independent, non-commercial online news service reporting on the ways people are tackling and solving problems in their communities, workplaces, schools and other social arenas. We are editorially independent and receive support from individuals and foundations. CIN co-directors Emily Bernheim and Peter Seares work with a national team of community-based correspondents.

What We Do

CIN covers innovations in the areas of health, the environment, civic engagement, law and justice, youth and education, diversity, mediation, self-determination for people with disabilities, the media, and the arts.

In addition to news articles, CIN provides contact information and background resources. Topics in the News, a special section on the Web site, offers resources and links to organizations involved in efforts to solve problems that are making national headlines. CIN is also an ideas exchange for grassroots innovation and solutions.

Why This Is Important

In an era of shrinking media ownership and profit-driven news values, Community Innovation News is an accurate and independent source of information on grassroots innovation and community initiative, demonstrating the critical difference individuals and groups can make to their community's well-being.

Background

In launching Community Innovation News, the editors and writers are building on experience gained at The American News Service, which over its five-year lifespan emphasized a solutions approach to news reporting and focused on innovative efforts to address social problems. Read responses to this work.

Use of CIN Stories

CIN articles highlight fresh approaches to community problems. They are used by teachers, community and civic leaders and others interested in learning about social innovation and exchanging ideas. They are also available for use by the media.

Articles may be downloaded and used free of charge for publication or other uses such as classroom instruction and group discussion, as long as users notify CIN and attribute the materials to Community Innovation News.

All CIN articles are copyrighted. To support CIN, members of the media are invited to observe their standard rates when using CIN articles. Clients may contract with us for specialized research and custom news content.

Non-Profit Status

Community Innovation News, a 501(c)(3) organization, is a media project of the San Francisco-based Tides Center, which provides administrative and other support to selected nonprofit organizations.
